By Kurt Mackie Microsoft on Monday noted the end of support for Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac, which are 'perpetual-license' versions of Microsoft's productivity suite software. Office 2016 for Mac is fully supported on High Sierra. For the best experience, we recommend you update Office to version 15.38 or later. For updates regarding macOS 10.14 Mojave, see Microsoft Office support for macOS 10.14 Mojave. Office 2016 for Mac. On October 13, 2020, Office 2016 for Mac and Office 2010 reach their end of support. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for either version. Also, as previously announced, after October 13, 2020, customers will need to be using Micros. Microsoft Office 2016 is a version of the Microsoft Office productivity suite, succeeding both Office 2013 and Office for Mac 2011 and preceding Office 2019 for both platforms. It was released on macOS on July 9, 2015, and on Microsoft Windows on September 22, 2015, for Office 365 subscribers. Mainstream support ended on October 13, 2020, and most editions have extended support up to October 14, 2025.

If your organization does not use Office 2016 for Mac you can disregard this message.

How does this affect me?

Although you will still be able to use Office 2016 for Mac, you will no longer receive security updates and bug fixes after October 13, 2020. Upgrade to a newer version of Office so you can stay up to date with all the latest features, patches, and security updates.

Recommended: Upgrading to Office 365, the subscription version of Office that comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other apps, depending on the plan you choose. With Office 365, you can get apps on your computer as well as premium functionality in the web and mobile apps and receive regular feature updates.
Upgrading to Office 2019 for Mac. Office 2019 for Mac is a one-time purchase (not a subscription) for installation on one Mac only. Office 2019 for Mac does not receive feature updates.

Office 2016 For Mac Support Ending

If you’re still using Microsoft’s Office 2016 on your Mac computer, you might want to take note that support for the productivity suite will be officially coming to an end in October 2020. This was announced by Microsoft on their support page where they also revealed that the end of support also means that Office 2016 users will no longer be able to connect to Office 365 services.

That being said, it should be noted that just because support will be coming to an end doesn’t mean that users will no longer be able to use the software anymore. Office 2016 for Mac will continue to function where you can still create Word or Excel documents and spreadsheets, but don’t expect support in terms of updates or new features. If you rely on Office 365 for connectivity reasons, then that will also no longer be possible.

However, for those who just need to use the software for basic word processing or spreadsheet capabilities, you can go ahead without any issue. In the meantime, if you think that it might be time for an upgrade, Microsoft is selling Office 2019 for $150. Alternatively, if you’d rather not worry about software no longer being supported, there’s Microsoft 365 Personal which will ensure that you’ll always have access for a $70/year subscription.
